Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD)

Bedfordshire Lymphoedema provides Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD).

MLD has many therapeutic benefits and involves gentle, relaxing hand movements that stimulate the Lymphatic System.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) involves gentle hand movements that aim to stimulate the lymphatic system. It is both remedial and preventative.

It is often referred to as "massage" but it is very different from sports, holistic and other remedial massages. MLD should cause a gentle friction to the skin which then stimulates the lymphatic vessels, and increasing the flow of lymph.

Increasing the flow of lymph means that the toxins and any other unwanted items keep draining away. However, if there is a blockage caused by illness, injury, surgery or some form of treatment; congestion can occur which results in localised swelling.

MLD encourages the flow of lymph, which for this one way system can be very beneficial if the body has been compromised in a particular way (for example; breast cancer surgery with radiotherapy/ chemotherapy).

Lymphatic Drainage has also been used as part of beauty regimes to reduce puffiness around the eyes as well as sinusitis, migraines and even pain control.

It is a very versatile treatment and can be used to good affect even if you are not ill. In some parts of the world it is used as part of a "detoxification" treatment in sports and well being arenas. The aim being to improve and support immunity, and to improve recovery rates from injury and illness.

We have recently introduced The WaveStone and ScarWork as another tool to help with mild to moderate Lymphoedema.

The Wavestone is made out of white jade that is made to contour the body. The stones can be used hot or cold. Using the stones in conjunction with Manual Lymphatic Drainage can be beneficial for the lymphatic and circulatory system.

MLD can help:

Promotes healing post operatively

Improve many chronic conditions in particular Lymphoedema

Strengthens your immune system in conjunction with a healthy diet and regular exercise.

Relieving fluid congestion

The treatment and control of lymphoedema (which may occur after cancer treatment)

And of course Relaxation!

Everyone who wishes to have MLD has to be assessed to see if it appropriate and safe. The time this takes can differ depending on the reason for MLD.

Longer assessments will be required for people with Lymphoedema and post operative needs.
